Zach had noticed that Jack was looking over his shoulder exactly a minute and forty-seven seconds ago. Forty-eight, now. With all the reflective surfaces in and around the lab, it was hard for anyone to be truly surprised unless they weren't paying attention. Zach was used to people not paying attention. Dr. Brennan--well, she got caught up in the work. She paid attention to the details that mattered.
Jack said, "Are you still reading those Conan novels?"
Zach memorized the page number reflexively and put the book down. "You were the one who suggested that I familiarize myself with portrayals of masculine archetypes."
Jack rolled his eyes. "I meant to go do some people-watching in a singles bar! Or anyplace where humans congregate."
"Besides," Zach said, "I already know what the archetypal FBI agent does, and I don't carry a gun, so that doesn't help."
Jack said, "And reading about some barbarian with a big sword does?"
Angela called through the door, "Guys, I didn't just hear that exchange. Okay? Okay."
Zach made a note to study the masculinity factor of various weapons, and continued reading.
