TREASURE HUNT #1, PART 2

Here are the group roles again:

question person
authorized to ask a teacher the group's questions

reader
reads directions and makes sure everyone understands them

materials person
organizes necessary materials and makes sure everyone has something to work on

reporter
takes notes so s/he can present the group's work to the class

1. Finish 1 through 4 on Part 1.

2. Check that you fulfilled all the requirements for 4 on Part 1.

3. Put together your map and directions but keep the location of the "treasure" a group secret. Find Ms. Lee. She will find you another group to work with.

4. Take turns following each other's directions on the map.

5. Both groups should answer the following questions together. Each person should initial one of their contributions to the writeup (one for each group).

  • Which kinds of directions (Cartesian-to-polar, polar-to-Cartesian, something else) were the easiest? Which were the hardest? Say what made them hard or easy.
  • How were the directions similar? How were they different?
  • What is a situation where you might convert coordinates in real life?
  • How does this kind of math describe the physical world?

6. Both reporters should write notes and organize a presentation to the class on what the groups found out. Reporters may recruit whomever they need for help!

7. Check 5 and 6 on this sheet to make sure you're done!
